Cooling and boondocking
Late summer is when two separate constraints arrive together. Cooling load peaks exactly when people are furthest from shore power, and the places they are parked are the places where the rules on staying there are least clearly written.

Panel wattage, battery capacity and inverter size are all consequences of a single figure: watt-hours per day. These show every step and gate nothing behind an email address.

Most writing in this category exists to sell hardware. The rest is written by people who have never had to explain to a customer why a 400W array and a 200Ah bank will not run an air conditioner in August. Neither group publishes the arithmetic, because the arithmetic is usually disappointing and disappointing numbers do not convert.
We publish the arithmetic. Every sizing figure here is shown as a calculation you can check line by line. Every cost comparison is itemised rather than summarised. Where a product is not worth the money or a build is not worth doing, that is what the page says. No vendor sees a page before it is published, and the results our calculators return are not softened to look achievable.
If that reads as austere, it is deliberate. This is a category where being handed a comfortable number costs real money about eighteen months later, usually in the form of a battery bank that was never large enough and a shoulder season that exposed it.
Start with the number, not the hardware
The most common and most expensive error in off-grid building is buying components before establishing consumption. Panel wattage, battery capacity and inverter size are all consequences of a single figure: watt-hours per day. Almost nobody knows theirs.
